Coaching

Your fastest laps against a faster driver's, corner by corner: where the time goes, why, and what to try next time.

Get coached

  1. Pick the car and track

The dashboard lists every car and track you've driven on Garage61 in the last 30 days.
  2. Add the other driver's laps

Choose a file with their laps at the same car and track, and press Coach me.
  3. Read the tips

The app takes your fastest clean lap this season in practice, in qualifying and in the race, and compares each with their fastest lap of the same kind. Each one gets its own tab.

Comparing like with like matters: race laps carry more fuel and traffic, qualifying laps fresh tyres. When their file has no lap of the same kind, their fastest lap is used and the page says so.

The other driver's laps

Any of these works:

A Garage61 telemetry export:
the CSV you download from a lap on Garage61. Driver, car, track and lap time come from the file name.
A laps file (JSON):
one or more laps with their session type, in the Garage61 channel names. Handy for practice, qualifying and race laps in one file.
Your own laps:
laps under your name are treated as your own: "your other lap" instead of a rival's.

Laps at another track, or whose length differs from yours by more than 3%, are refused, so you never get tips from a different layout.

What the result shows

Summary:
the gap to their lap and the corners with the biggest gains.
Tips:
one per corner, biggest time loss first: what the telemetry shows, and what to try.
Habits:
a mistake in several corners (like coasting between brake and throttle) is reported once, not in every tip.
Trade-offs:
corners where you're slower in but faster out (or the reverse), and whether the trade pays off.
Strengths:
corners where you're already faster.
Telemetry:
time gap, speed, throttle and brake for both laps, a corner strip and a track map. Everything zooms together.

Bruxelles: braking too late. Braking 11 m later, but 3 km/h slower at the apex. → Brake earlier, focus on a clean apex.

The kinds of tip

Each tip comes from comparing one corner of your lap with theirs. The main kinds:

TipWhat it meansWhat it suggests
Braking too earlyYou brake 10 m or more before them and gain nothing for itBrake later by about half the gap, then build up
Braking too lateYou brake later but end up slower at the apexBrake earlier, focus on a clean apex
Entry too fastFaster at turn-in, paid for later in the cornerTurn in a little slower
Too much brake / braking too longMore brake pressure, or brake held longer, than they needEase the brake or release it sooner
Lifting too longIn a lift corner, your lift is longer or deeperLift later, keep it short
Too slow mid-corner3 km/h or more slower at the apexRelease the brake earlier, or carry more speed
CoastingNo pedal pressed between brake and throttleGo straight from one pedal to the other
Late on the throttleBack on the throttle 15 m or more after themGet on the throttle earlier
Slow to full throttleYou get to full throttle more slowlyRoll on faster
Slow exitLower speed leaving the cornerApex a bit later, power on sooner
Gear choiceA different gear at the apexTry their gear
Time lostThe inputs look the same, so it's likely your lineTry a different turn-in or a later apex (see Your line)

Your line

When both laps have position data, the app measures how far across the track your line sits from theirs in each corner: at turn-in, at the apex and on exit, towards the inside or the outside. Differences of a metre or more are added to the tips.

Line: you turn in 1.3 m wider; you're 1.4 m further from the apex.

This explains time lost where braking and throttle look the same. A Your line elsewhere list covers other corners where the line differs and you lose 0.1 s or more.

On the track map, click a corner to zoom in: both lines are drawn, you in blue and them in orange. At corner zoom a metre is about a pixel, so the gap between the lines is drawn 4× larger (sideways only, so the shape stays true). Untick the box for true scale.

Rate the tips

Every tip has 👍 and 👎. A 👎 asks why in one click: not what happened, already knew, can't do it or unclear. Votes add up by kind of tip (say, “braking too late”), so after two votes new tips of that kind say whether that advice has helped you before.
